For the majority of Christian denominations, the Holy Spirit, or Holy Ghost, is believed to be the third person of the Trinity, God manifested as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, each being God. Due to Christianity's historical relationship with Judaism, theologians often identify the Holy Spirit with the concept of the Ruach Hakodesh in Jewish scripture, on the theory that Jesus was expanding upon these Jewish concepts. Similar names, and ideas, include the Ruach Elohim (Spirit of God), Ruach YHWH (Spirit of Yahweh), and the Ruach Hakodesh (Holy Spirit). In the New Testament it is identified with the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of Truth, the Paraclete and the Holy Spirit.
The New Testament details a close relationship between the Holy Spirit and Jesus during his earthly life and ministry. The New Testament details a close relationship between the Holy Spirit and Jesus during his earthly life and ministry. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke and the Nicene Creed state that Jesus was "conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary". The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus like a dove during his baptism, and in his Farewell Discourse after the Last Supper Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to his disciples after his departure.
The uniqueness of the Holy Spirit is His presence within us. Jesus said before he ascended to heaven that the Holy Spirit would come and dwell within us as a believer. With that, He empowers us to live victoriously for the cause of Christ and glory of the Father.
“The Holy Spirit illuminates the minds of people, makes us yearn for God, and takes spiritual truth and makes it understandable to us.” –Billy Graham
The Holy Spirit is a beautiful and powerful part of who God is. We need Him in our life as a conduit to become who God created us to be, and through His power we have aid in all situations. Without Him, we are powerless.
Our first encounter with the Holy Spirit is when He convicts us of our sin, shows us that none of us can live up to the righteousness of Jesus, and reveals to us the judgment that is coming to those who die without a Savior (John 16:8-11). Our first encounter with the Holy Spirit is when He convicts us of our sin, shows us that none of us can live up to the righteousness of Jesus, and reveals to us the judgment that is coming to those who die without a Savior (John 16:8-11). As we repent, confess our sins and receive the gift of Salvation the Holy Spirit regenerates our dead inner human spirit which now becomes sensitive to the spiritual things of God (John 3:1-16; Acts 2:38).
There is a second work of the Holy Spirit when He baptizes a believer (Acts 2:1-4). It's available to all (Acts 2:39) and a gift of empowerment, helping the believer to live a holy life. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, the Helper, we become more like Jesus and are directed to do the Father's will. Furthermore, the gift is primarily for the empowerment to witness to others (Acts 1:8).
Every Christian is given one or more Spiritual gifts by the Holy Spirit upon conversion. Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12 list the various gifts. 1 Corinthians 13, and 14 provide teaching on how to utilize the gifts within the Church. Every believer receives one or more Spiritual Gifts. Our job is to discover, develop and deploy those gifts to bring Glory to God.
Galatians 5:22,23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
The word fruit is singular, meaning there are 9 aspects to the fruit of the Spirit in a Christian's life but they are all supposed to be present in their life.
God wants us to be conformed to the image of Christ. The process to achieve this is called sanctification and is a life time process.
It is through the prompting and empowerment of the Holy Spirit in our lives that we are able to become more and more like Jesus as we travel through this life.
Open your heart to what God wants to do in your life
Tell Him He is welcome in your life.
Ask someone to pray for you.
Ephesians 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit
The tense of the verb be filled is the perfect present which means to be filled and keep on being filled. It is not a singular event but is supposed to occur daily and even many time each day.
We are to continually give ourselves over to God and let Him fill us with His Holy Spirit.
While we benefit from being filled with the Holy Spirit, it is intended for us to share that blessing with others.
We are not to be a stagnant vessel but a conduit of God's living water flowing from us to others we meet daily.
